When we first saw the new Lexus LC500 we were impressed by its sleek lines and aggressive stance. It looks fast! But, when we read Motor Trend’s review of the striking new coupe we couldn’t help but feel a little underwhelmed.
Don’t misunderstand, the quad-cam 5.0-liter V-8 generates 471 horsepower at 7,100 RPM and will take the sleek machine from 0 to 60 in under five seconds; that’s pretty quick by any standard. Still, when compared to the Lexus GS F sedan and the RC F Coupe (both with slightly less horsepower) the LC500 falls a little short.
Now we are not saying that the new LC500 doesn’t have its merits, but if it’s performance you’re after, you can get an RC F-Type Coupe for about $30,000 less and it will get you to sixty miles per hour a half second faster. Thirty Gs is a whole lot of pocket change!
On the other hand, if you are looking for luxury, the LC500 has it in spades! With hand-selected, hand stitched leather interior, heated and ventilated front seats, and a glass roof, the driver-centric cockpit has a luxurious feel that you won’t find in the RC Coupe.
Add to that optional 8-way power front seats and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-wrapped shift knob, aluminum foot pedals, and dual zone climate control and you’ll never want to leave your car.
The LC’s list of standard safety features is also impressive! With intelligent high beam headlamps, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitors, lane keep assist, dynamic radar cruise control, backup camera, and ten airbags you can rest assured that the LC500 will keep you safe on the road.
All in all, the new Lexus LC500 offers up a lot in the way of creature comforts and standard safety features, but those amenities come at a cost. All that added weight is part of the reason the LC doesn’t perform quite as well as the competition. Still, it’s no pooch and will get you where you want to go pretty damn fast.
